Background & Personality

Hikaru grew up in a world where he and his brother, Kaoru, used to reject others, being very close minded as to who they let into this "bubble" that he and his brother created with each other. It seemed no one would ever accept them, nor did it seem that anyone cared to notice that he and Kaoru are different people, even if they are identical. Their parents were hardly ever around due to their busy lifestyles, mother being a famous fashion designer, and father being a computer software designer. Once there was a maid that he and Kaoru became very close to. When they asked her to play along with one of their games, however, she told them that no one would ever be able to tell them apart. It was believed that no one would ever be able to tell them apart, or care enough to actually try.

Hikaru and his brother are very much contradictions in several ways. They grew up wanting people to tell them apart and accept them, but shut them out since they viewed everyone as "idiots" because of their sheltered lifestyle. They wanted to learn what it was like to be individuals, because they know in their hearts that they are different, but they just can't stand to be apart from each other and try to do things differently in order to do so. They are so dependent on each other and are always together that it's difficult to be different. They even make a game out of having others tell them apart, called the, “Which is Hikaru game?” They will play this game with anyone who will play along, and yet are disappointed with how most people fail to tell them apart.

That all changed in middle school, after meeting a transfer student named Tamaki Suoh, who constantly tried to tell them apart. In high school, they became friends, and thanks to Tamaki, the brothers started becoming more social, due to partaking in the Host Club (after being pestered enough to do so), something started by Tamaki. They let other people into their lives. It was no longer a world of just Hikaru and Kaoru, but Hikaru, Kaoru, and friends who became like family, too.

Hikaru and Kaoru are known as "the little devil type" in the Host Club. Their personalities are very much devious, causing trouble wherever they can. Putting on a show of "twincest" for attention from the ladies, flirting with them, playing with them. Together they put on such dramatic displays of false smiles, fake tears, anything at all to get what they want. Even if it's something as simple as getting a certain reaction they want to get out of someone. They’re into computer games, as well as video games, and are quite picky about what is fun. With their tendency to get bored very easily, a game could be fun one day, and the next they’ve moved onto something else. They treat their games like they treat people. If a person is fun to tease for a day or two, they will soon get bored and move on to someone else to give them the same treatment.

They are both very selfish, though it's more obvious with Hikaru. He gets possessive when people get too close to "his" friends, and becomes upset and angry. You always know when Hikaru is around, as he is always noisy and boisterous. He's got a comment about everything, he always finds something to criticize, and he has a tendency to make people look stupid by putting them down and hurting their feelings because he would much rather say whatever is on his mind than hold back. As loud as the brothers are when they’re together, Hikaru is the only one of the two who is remains loud all of the time. He is more childish and immature when he’s alone, because Kaoru is usually the one to get him to stop doing things when he goes too far, and calms him down when he’s getting too angry. He can be nice and have manners if he really tries, and he can be surprisingly mature when he actually sits alone and thinks thoroughly about things. His most mature moment would be when he dyed his own hair a different color, so that people would be able to tell him and his brother apart easier. He said that the reason people are rarely able to tell them apart, is because they never made the effort to differentiate themselves from one another. Dyeing his hair meant taking the first step in maturing and becoming independent, something they have always had issues doing.

Hikaru is the dominant one of the two, coming up with most, if not all of the ideas of what they should do to entertain themselves and their customers at the Host club. The both of them have developed feelings for Haruhi, but Kaoru stepped down because Hikaru means more to him than anyone else. Hikaru's happiness is important to Kaoru, and he will do what he can to help him achieve it. Of course, Hikaru is always very thankful and appreciative of his brother's support, even if sometimes he has to step in and set things straight.

Despite the aforementioned personality tidbits, there is much more to Hikaru than meets the eye. Hikaru is an emotional person, which is apparent with how he throws his anger at people when they upset him. He tends to run away from the situation because he doesn’t know how to deal with things without yelling and threatening violence (even though he won’t really do anything -- all bark and no bite). Hikaru is actually very insecure, something he doesn’t like to admit, nor does he know how to properly express, with how confident he acts in front of others. He goes through bouts of loneliness, confusion, and just generally feeling lost in life. While he prefers to behave in an honest, blunt manner, he can feel ashamed of something he has said or done, especially in regards to his brother. Something happening to Kaoru is one of the scariest things in the world for Hikaru, to the point where there is anxiety, his hands are trembling, and he can’t stop panicking. It could be the littlest thing, like Kaoru getting a small cut on his face, but it is a huge deal to Hikaru. He is a nervous, anxious person at heart. Having an argument with Kaoru crushes his heart to the point where he has left him and gone to someone else, because he becomes too ashamed to face his own brother.

Although he is still dependent on Kaoru, it's becoming more apparent that Hikaru has been maturing. He's been able to remain calm and somewhat patient in situations that usually would set him off with the snap of a finger. He's been more understanding of people and their feelings. He’s more willing to lend people a hand, whereas before he wouldn’t even bother, nor would he have cared.

Hikaru is trying his hardest to figure out this whole being in "love" thing. He's very much confused about it, and is often left flustered or embarrassed. Haruhi is the first person the two brothers have met who has been able to tell them apart easily (as far as they know), which amazes Hikaru in a way he doesn’t seem to understand. He doesn't know what to do about it, or how to act. That's what he gets for having fail people skills. Nevertheless, with the support of Kaoru and their friends, and after some maturing and some thinking, he's been learning to accept the fact that he and Haruhi will probably never be together.
