Character Info

Personality:

Maya is a very excitable, somewhat child-like young woman. She's quite friendly and social unless she's determined that someone is not one of "the good guys." Unfortunately she's a bit prone to jump to conclusions on just who might be the villains, often based on a person's look, such as having a scary face. (Though she'll change her mind if she sees that she is wrong.) Generally positive in demeanor, Maya manages to stay upbeat even in the face of adversity, whether it be helping to solve a murder case against all the odds or being falsely accused as a murderer herself.

Maya is rather obstinate and has a strong sense of justice. She's willing to fight until the very end and would rather sacrifice herself than to let someone who was really guilty get away free. Although usually quite obvious about her emotions, Maya also has a self-sacrificing nature when it comes to those she cares for. Rather than simply giving into despair and mourning the death of her long lost mother through an elaborate plot by her aunt manipulating her dear cousin Pearl, Maya hid her emotions to both be strong for Pearl and not put the girl in any more guilt than she already felt. In this way, she is shown to be quite responsible and mature when it does matter.

Maya is somewhat naive (though not nearly as much as her younger cousin Pearl), having spent most of her life growing up in Kurain Village, traditional home to the Fey family, away from many modern conveniences and culture. This has helped fuel her curiosity, which is exhibited by examining anything she finds interesting and cool, even if it would get her in trouble. This curiosity has bolstered her (informal) detective work alongside Phoenix Wright for cases at the Wright & Co. Law Offices. Her enthusiasm in case work has lead her to take such unorthodox approaches to investigation as searching for a lake monster with a metal detector to help solve a murder case. (Somehow this actually helped the case involved in the end.) Although not the most perceptive person around, her training has lead her to be able to notice occasionally when things seem to be just a little contradictory, even if she can't quite put her finger on why.

In recent years she's learned more and more about pop culture and technology so that she's familiar with a lot of common technology of the early 21st century Earth like cellphones and televisions. (Although more complex things like computers are still pretty hit or miss.) Her discovery of television has lead her to become a huge fan of tokusatsu TV series and movies, particularly the Samurai meta-series. Other kinds of performances, like magician acts, also excite her greatly. She also has a great love for ramen and hamburgers. However, despite her wide and often modern interests, she retains wearing her traditional Japanese-style medium-in-training robes, symbolizing her connection to the traditional ways.

Abilities:

Maya is the current master of the Kurain Channeling Technique. The Kurain technique is significant as it allows the medium's body not only to be controlled by the spirit being channeled, but also physically change to reflect the spirit's body (other than details like hair and clothing). During this state, the medium falls completely unconscious, such that she would not even dream. Having come into her powers much further than before, Maya is capable of even pulling channeled spirits from less powerful mediums, such as her cousin Pearl, and channeling them herself.

Furthermore, the spirituality of the Kurain technique is intricately linked with Psyche-Locks, red psychic locks and chains that symbolize a person's lies. Normally these cannot be seen by human eyes, but someone wielding a spiritually charged magatama can view them and thus be aware that the truth is locked away. As a person's contradictions are challenged, the locks may be broken one-by-one until the person breaks down and cannot hide the truth any longer. (But people with an iron will who will absolutely not tell the truth no matter what may manifest unbreakable black Psyche-Locks.) Although initially unaware of what exactly a spiritually charged magatama does, Maya is now aware and likely could charge her own magatama to do the same, should she desires.

Although further details of her psychic powers are hinted at, the games do not thoroughly cover everything in nearly enough detail to be for certain. However, it is suggested that Maya has some level of extrasensory perception, though it is possible this may only extend to the spiritual world.
