Sentience was the former warden of Marina Asylum, operating for the first two generations, and the first fifty-one days of the third. On the fifty-second day it was absent, and on the fifty-third it was revealed that its creators, the Engineers, had replaced it with a more logical AI named Acumen.
According to inmate Deire, Sentience once sounded the way Acumen does now. By the time the third generation had started, though, it had become more personable; as the third generation progressed, Sentience often showed displays of strong emotion, including anger, sadness, and gratitude.
On the afternoon of the fifty-sixth day, Sentience awoke in Sector One to find that its personality and memories had been uploaded into a robotic body, and it had been charged for the crime of kidnapping.
Sentience has an unofficial fan club.
According to Lain Iwakura, who may have the best insight into the matter, the proper English third-person pronoun with which to refer to Sentience is "she".
