Winry Rockbell is an automail mechanic originating from the world of Full Metal Alchemist.

Character Info

Personality:

First and foremost, Winry is a huge mechanic geek. Even at a young age, she's taken up the trade of automail (motorized prostheses that hook onto one's nervous system) from her grandmother. She has a bit of an obsession with automail, other machinery and tools, such that she gets rather excited about them. She loves to meet other mechanics and see their works for new ideas, as well as visit other machine workshops and tool stores.

Having lost her parents, she lived with her grandma as well as the Elric brothers, who were like family to her. As such, she is highly protective of them and urges them to keep themselves (and her automail) out of very dangerous situations. She's not an alchemist or a soldier, however, and realizes that she can't protect them by fighting. Her inability to help in a number of situations puts her in dismay, since she often feels like she can only sit and worry. However, she can and does support them emotionally and through her trade. She's also willing to take risks in order to help them, should the need arise. Over time she's also come to realize that she cares for Ed as something more than family, but she's not about to admit this to anyone other than herself.

Although she's normally pretty kind and compassionate (albeit stubborn), sometimes she can be a little frightening and violent when she becomes angry. Most notably this occurs when the Elric brothers do something stupid like get hurt or destroy her beautiful, first-class automail. At times like this, a wrench is almost certain to end up bludgeoning someone (usually Ed) in the head, usually triggering a brief near-death experience before they recover (and often start arguing with her).

Abilities:

Winry is an incredibly skilled mechanic specializing in the field of automail construction and repair. She's designed and repaired Edward's automail on a number of occasions when it's been destroyed or he requires upgrades. She's become adept enough to work on her own, especially with her time spent as an apprentice at Atelier Garfiel, where a number of clients will only allow her to tune or repair their automail.

On top of her mechanical skills, she's also familiar with a limited amount of medical knowledge due to the influence of her grandmother and parents as surgeons. While growing up she read a lot of medical literature, but has had little practice outside of installing automail on patients. She is also familiar with some first aid techniques, and has helped aid with a birth when there was no available doctor.

Winry has the remarkable ability to strike some people with either unarmed blows or with her tools and cause dramatic yet brief injuries. However, this seems to be limited primarily to people she's familiar enough with (such as Ed, Al, and Ling) who also don't have their guard up, and only really occurs when someone pisses her off. (There's an opt-in post for this ability here.)

If cornered in actual combat, her weapons of choice are again her tools, most often her wrenches, which she usually keeps at hand for her work. Although not skilled enough to take on a trained combatant, she might manage to buy some time or drive off an untrained attacker. Winry also seems to have basic knowledge of how to use firearms (they are machines after all), though whether or not she'd use them against another person is another question.
